Programs Celebrate the Contributions of African Americans in U.S. and Worldwide

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he National Theme for Black History Month 2023 is Black Resistance, which celebrates the stories of how African Americans have mobilized for freedom and justice through the years. 91茄子鈥檚 Director of Diversity and Inclusion Lawrence Brinson has planned events to recognize and honor the contributions of African Americans to society both in the United States and worldwide.

鈥淭he Black experience has touched every facet of society, including the arts, sciences, politics, civil rights, and beyond,” Brinson reflected. 鈥淏lack History is not just about learning about the challenges of African Americans. It is about achievement and the ability to have integrity, leadership, and determination in the face of many struggles.鈥

Black History Month was originally established as a week-long celebration in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, the second Black American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard. Woodson wanted to make sure school children were given the opportunity to learn about African Americans who played important roles in the creation of America.

鈥淢oving to a more equitable and inclusive tomorrow starts with reflections on the past,鈥 Brinson noted. 鈥淲hile February is designated as a time to celebrate Black heritage, may we remember and honor the tremendous impact of African Americans all year round.鈥
